(SEYMOUR) - The National Weather Service honored 91-year-old Ruth Everhart, of Seymour, for keeping track of the temperature, rain and snow at her home for nearly 64 years.
Family members and weather service officials surprised her Sunday by recognizing her as the state's longest-serving weather observer, says Al Shipe of the National Weather Service office in Indianapolis.
Everhart said she would keep up filing her daily weather reports for a while from her home along East Fork of White River for another year. That'll be 65 years. If she continues for another 5 years she will break the national record.
Among the weather events she's recorded include a high temperature of 106 degrees in 1954 and nearly 30 inches of snow in December 2004.
Ken Scheeringa, of the Indiana State Climatology Office in West Lafayette, presented Everhart with a copy of the first monthly report she submitted to the weather service in 1947.
Each morning at 7 a.m., Everhart records the maximum and minimum temperatures, the amount of rainfall, the river level and snow depth. NWS officials said she calls in the report at 7:07 a.m. every day, sending in 23,000 observations over the 64 years.
