(BROWN COUNTY) - Staff on the Hoosier National Forest has scheduled several prescribed burns this fall, including one in the Spurgeon Corner area of Brown County near the Jackson County line.

Prescribed burning achieves a variety of objectives in restoring forest communities.

The prescribed burns will occur starting Saturday and continue through Nov. 11 as weather and conditions become favorable.

Brad Lidell, acting Hoosier fire management officer, said overall 1,646 acres are being prepared to be burned as weather permits.

Areas proposed to be prescribed burned this fall include what is called the Harris Track, covering small areas near Spurgeon Corner in Brown County.

The exact date of the burns is dependent on weather and fuel conditions, Lidell said. Fires will be by hand, using drip torches.

"The public in the immediate area of the prescribed burn will be notified once we have a specific date for ignition," he said. Lidell also encourages anyone who lives immediately around where a prescribed burn is planned with medical issues that might be affected by smoke, such as asthma or emphysema, to call the agency.

"We want to do everything we can to minimize affects on our neighbors," he said.

For questions on the prescribed burns, to request notification or to report medical conditions, call the Indiana Interagency Coordination Center at (812) 547-9262.
