(BLOOMINGTON) - Officials are working on plans for long-term repairs to a sinkhole underneath the main runway at the Monroe County Airport.
Airport manager Bruce Payton says the sinkhole isn't posing imminent danger to the airport's 6,500-foot-long runway, but that repairs can't wait much longer.
Payton says the county aviation board is seeking a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to cover 95% of the project's estimated $5.6 million cost.
Payton says the proposal calls for removing soil down to the bedrock and then building a stone base that could be 15 feet deep in places.
The timing of the repair work at the airport a few miles west of Bloomington depends on FAA approval.
