(UNDATED) - In Indiana, an estimated 4,760 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. 870 will die from it.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
However, the American Cancer Society says that thanks in part to early detection and improved treatment; there will be more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors.
The American Cancer Society's Vicki Rakowski says early detection is so critical in the fight against breast cancer.
Women 40 and older are encouraged to have a yearly mammogram and clinical breast exam.
Women ages 20 to 39 are advised to receive a clinical breast exam once every three years.
The ACS's Great Lakes Division has two major initiatives going this October to support their breast cancer awareness and early detection effort.
One is the 2011 Indiana Mammography Guide, a catalog of mammography facilities with information about cost, wait times and insurance.
Also taking place is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks in cities across Indiana including Jasper on October 16th.
