Newberry Woman Arrested After Exchanging Flip-Flops For Winter Boots

Last updated on Friday, October 28, 2011

(BLOOMFIELD) - 55-year-old Sue Warren, was arrested Saturday night after she walked out of the Pamida department store on U.S. 231 in Bloomfield with a new pair of winter boots she failed to pay for.

She was arrested after Store Manager Judy Hammond saw Warren walking in the boots, with the tags still on, in the parking lot. Warren was actually helping return carts to the store.
Hammond asked Warren to come back into the store so they could talk about the boots she had on.

Warren admitted to Bloomfield Deputy Town Marshal Harvey Holt that she stole the boots, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Warren went to the store in a pair of dirty pink flip-flops. She told police she was "broke" and her feet had been cold for the past few nights. Warren told police she walked to the store, but had no money, and went to the shoe department and tried on a pair of brown size 8 1/2 women's Airwalk boots that were priced at $39.99, and tried them on to check the size. Warren told police she exchanged the flip-flops for the boots and she also admitted to stealing two 15-feet dog cables prior to taking the boots.

Police found the dog chains in a bag-type purse in a shopping cart left at the front of the store.
In a video interview at the Greene County Jail, Warren told police she was guilty of shoplifting and "acting stupid."

When asked if she was going to pay for any of the items she said "Probably not, because if you are swiping, you are swiping."

Warren bonded out of jail later after posting 10 percent of an $8,000 bond. She will appear in Greene County Circuit Court on Nov. for an initial hearing on charges of theft, a Class D felony.
