Lawrence County Council Takes Salary Ordinance Under Advisement

Last updated on Wednesday, October 26, 2011

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Council is taking a proposed salary ordinance for 2012 under advisement. There was one major change involving the salaries for the highway department.

Instead of employees receiving bonuses, those bonuses will be incorporated into their salaries, say Council Member Keith Dillman.

"This simplifies things," he says. "There are no changes to the salaries in this ordinance, we are just taking the bonuses that the highway department employees receive and working them into the hourly salaries."

In other business the council:

*Approved an additional appropriation of $10,000 to the Cum Capital Fund to replace a boiler at the courthouse and to have a $3,000 cushion for other repairs that may be needed.

* Approved an additional appropriation of $6,200 to the Cum Capital Fund to pay for the new security fence around the Lawrence County Jail.

* Approved an additional appropriation of $8,000 to Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill to pay for outstanding autopsy bills.

* Approved for Lawrence County Purdue Extension Educator Dave Redman to hire a new part-time secretary and approved the hiring of a new part-time youth educator. The current secretary is leaving to attend school and the current youth educator resigned.

* Approved Dr. Alan Smith to hire a part-time nurse at the Lawrence County Health Department. The county was working on an agreement with Hoosier Uplands to contract a nurse from them, but both parties could not reach an agreement.

*Approved a contractual arrangement table showing how $9,071 of LOIT funding will be distributed to each volunteer fire department. Billie Tumey, county auditor, who did the table, estimated the allotments based on last year's levy.
