Fire Investigation Continues At George's Gateway

Last updated on Wednesday, October 26, 2011

(BEDFORD) - Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the devastating fire at George’s Gateway.

Investigators searched through rubble again Tuesday. Bedford Fire Department Investigator David Wright and Deputy State Fire Marshal Matt Wells were at the scene most of the day Monday and again Tuesday.

Complicating the investigation is the extensive damage to the facility. Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner says with fires like George's, its hard to determine the cause because of all the flammable materials like paints, fertilizers and solvents, it just makes for a fast-burning and extremely hot fire.

Wagnor compared George's fire to the Jan. 17th fire at Fultz Auto NAPA store. The cause of that fire was never determined.

Owner Tom Bertolino was at the scene with investigators. He has not commented on if he will rebuild the business. Wagnor is estimating damages at more than $1.25 million.

He is asking curious residents to stay away from the building and respect the yellow warning tape. "It's a dangerous area to be around," he says.
