(AVOCA) - Three dogs were shot at a home on Teddy Bird Lane Monday.

The dogs were shot with a small caliber firearm, according to Lawrence County Chief Deputy Mike Branham said. A beagle died. Two other dogs, a yellow Labrador retriever was shot three times, but is expected to live. The third is severely injured with its medical status unknown. The dogs were shot in the head.

Branham said a man, who had been remodeling the home at 8 Teddy Bird Lane, and had left, when he returned about 5 p.m., he found the dogs shot in their pen.

"We're following up with neighbors to see if anybody heard or saw anything, and the investigation is continuing," Branham said.
