Early Deer Bow Season Is Here

Last updated on Monday, October 3, 2011

(UNDATED) - Dust off your long bows. The Indiana early archery deer season began Saturday and continues through November 27th.

Kevin Hoffman is with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He says all hunters must have a valid and appropriate deer hunting license before heading out into the woods.

Mandatory hunter education is required for anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986; however, individuals of any age may buy an apprentice license without hunter education if a licensed hunter is present during hunt.

Legal archery equipment includes long bows, compound bows and re-curve bows. Arrows must be tipped with broad heads that are metal, metal-edged, or napped flint, chert or obsidian. Crossbows are not legal for use in the early season, but are legal in the late season, Dec. 3 - Jan. 1. Hoffman says hunters who use tree stands should always have on a safety-harness with three points of contact with the stand or tree. He says a safety harness can help avoid d a common and preventable accident.
