(UNDATED) - No big changes are expected for this year's deer or turkey hunting seasons, according to Department of Natural Resources biologists.

Currently, early archery seasons for both white-tailed deer and wild turkey are open. Firearm season for wild turkey is Oct. 19-30. Firearm season for deer is Nov. 12-27.

Chad Stewart, a deer biologist with DNR, expects about 130,000 to 135,000 deer taken this year. He bases that number on the fact that there has been no significant disease outbreaks this year and food is plentiful.

Steve Backs, a DNR biologist, says the numbers for wild turkeys will be lower because the number of turkey hunters is falling and because the past few years turkey reproduction numbers have been down.

But there are factors that may increase numbers: warm weather, a good acorn crop and farm fields still have crops in them.

Backs predicts a fall wild turkey harvest of between 700-800 birds.
