Combine Sparks Cause Fire In Corn Field

Last updated on Thursday, October 6, 2011

(IRELAND) - Ireland Volunteer Fire Deparment Chief Stan Seifert said firefighters responded to a field and combine in the 4400 block of West 500 North at the Harris Brothers Farm.

Firefighters arrived and found about 1/10th of an acre of corn husks and stalks on fire. The fire started from sparks from the front of a combine that developed a mechanical problem.

The driver of the combine tried to steer the machine out into the road where it could not start a fire, but a small fire had already started.

Another area farmer brought a tractor with a disk and tilled up the affected area to keep the fire from spreading.
