Stalker School Project Will Be Jewel Of Community

(BEDFORD0 - Gene McCracken, Executive Director of Lawrence County Economic Management told the Lawrence County Commisioners Tuesday morning that the old Stalker School project will be “a crown jewel of the community.”

Hoosier Uplands purchased the school and plans to transform it into an apartment complex featuring 21 two-bedroom apartments.

According to the current proposal, rent would range from $235-$490 per month, depending on income status. The average rent would be $396.

The apartments would feature energy-efficient heat and central air, washer/dryer hook-up, refrigerator, range, microwave, dishwasher and disposal. The complex also would include a computer center, community room and fitness center.

The roof and windows needed repaired before winter and the Economic Growth Council agreed to pay $10,000 toward those repairs.

In other business:

*Bob Dillon, County Project Supervisor, reported repairs at the bridge on Huron-Williams Road were complete, but the roadway still needed paved. Repair work would begin on the Rivervale bridge. The commissions also vacated a driveway on Leatherwood Circle.

*David Holmes, County Highway superintendent, reported paving was almost complete on Hayes Road. The road was being repaired because a water line was replaced. Paving was complete on Clover Lane. Holmes reported that FEMA had signed off and approved reimbursement for storm and flood damage.

* Valerie Luchauer, Emergency Management Director said the Williams Volunteer Fire Department held a mock disaster.

* Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 139 prisoners in the jail; 14 Department of Correction inmates and 26 females.
