(SEYMOUR) - Seymour Municipal Airport was awarded nearly $1.9 million in grant money which it will use to reconstruct its main runway.
The Federal Aviation Administration approved the grant last week, says Don Furlow, airport manager. The money will be enough to improve and strengthen the first 3,000 feet of Runway 5-23, leaving another 1,500 feet needing funded.
Furlow is hoping to get funding for the remaining runway next year. The entire project is estimated to cost between $4 to $5 million, Furlow says.
Construction will begin in the spring. Airport officials have been working on funding for the project for several years because the runway is showing signs of deterioration.
Dave O'Mara Contractors of North Vernon was awarded the construction contract. While Runway 5-23 is being completed, pilots will have to use Runaway 1432.
With the improved runway, officials are hoping to see more military and commercial air traffic, which would benefit the community.
