(SEYMOUR) - A Seymour man drowned Friday afternoon in the east fork of White River, near a dam north of the city.

Carlos Nava, 22, of Seymour, had been swimming in a shallow area of the river when he ventured into a deeper channel and was unable to stay afloat, said Indiana Conservation Officer Nathan Berry.

Pathologist Dr. Wes Whitler conducted autopsy and toxicology tests on Nava's body Saturday at Schneck Medical Center. No results were available this morning. An autopsy and testing is standard procedure in a case like this, said Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler. No foul play is suspected, and the preliminary cause of death is drowning, he added.

Divers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Police arrived at the river and began searching for Nava at 2:44 p.m. They found his body 30 feet from the shoreline in about 8 feet of water.

Police said the currents in that area can be very strong and can pull someone under quickly.
