Orleans Marks Town 200th Birthday

(ORLEANS) - Orleans Town Clerk Robert Henderson has announced the town is looking ahead and making initial plans to mark the town’s 200th Birthday in 2015.

A number of possible projects are being considered to mark the occasion.

One project Henderson has recently undertaken is the gathering of historic type items for a special permanent and rotating display at the town offices. The display area which is slated to be expanded later this fall includes an array of historic items all relating to Orleans with nearly 200 years of history.

Henderson said he has been very pleased in the number of unique & interesting items that residents past and present have generously donated to the growing collection over the past several months, but believes there are still some real "treasures" linked to the town's past that have yet to be unearthed or perhaps has been forgotten about in garages, basements or attics.

"I remain hopeful that others in our community will still come forward as we move closer towards our bicentennial wishing to ensure as well that our town's historic artifacts are preserved for future generations," Henderson said. "We will have on-going rotating type of displays utilizing a variety of donated artifacts," he added.

Some items being sought for the collection include: any type of film, old period photographs, letters, postcards, books, newspapers, documents, items related to early families or individuals, obits, promotional items from old time businesses, Monon, the war years, community leaders, schools, churches, civic groups, political items, fire and police links, old period phone books or town directories, any type of interesting artifacts with a link to the town's history.

Henderson said that any donated items will become property of the town's historic collection will be properly catalogued, exhibited or conserved, if needed.
