(BEDFORD) - The public can tour the GM Powertrain plant in Bedford this Thursday. The company is calling the event “A Thank-You To The Community.”
Free tours will be offered from 10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the plant, at 105 GM Drive in Bedford.
In addition, a news conference will be held at 4 p.m. and a special announcement of community grants from the General Motors Foundation will be held at the plant.
Those taking a tour must wear closed-toed shoes; no high heels. Handicap-accessible tours will be available.
In addition to the plant tours, attractions during the open house will include GM vehicle displays; a ride-and-drive, including the opportunity to drive the new Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle; and interactive display by Safe Kids USA; and displays featuring The Transformers display cars; Dredbot & Bumble Bee and the Freedom Camaro.
"GM is investing in U.S. manufacturing and producing the finest-quality vehicles in our history," Eric Gonzales, plant manager, says in a press release. "We are proud of our employees, our products and our plants, and we want to show people why. People have a certain perception as to what the inside of a plant looks like. They are always amazed at what they actually see and learn."
The event is co-hosted by UAW and IBEW union members.
"On behalf of all the UAW and IBEW members of the Bedford plant, we are honored to co-host this event for our friends and neighbors in the area," says shop chairman Jack Woods. "It will highlight all the great things that the UAW, IBEW and GM do in this area. In addition, the event will showcase rich heritage of the UAW, IBEW and GM working together and to the efforts of the men and women of the Bedford plant."
GM is hosting open houses this year in each of its 54 U.S. facilities as a way to thank the American public for their support and to showcase its employees and products.
