Former Paoli High School Becomes Apartment Complex

Last updated on Monday, September 26, 2011

(PAOLI) - The 40-year-old former Paoli High School will now serve the community in a different it was dedicated Friday as College Hill Apartments.

The building's auditorium will now serve as a community room and former classrooms were transformed into 24 apartments, with units ranging from one to three bedrooms. Hoosier Uplands purchased the building and did the $6 million renovations.

The auditorium is dedicated to the late Hilma Murphy, who graduated from PHS in 1944 and was a member of the Hoosier Uplands board of directors, says Hoosier Uplands Chief Executive Officer David.

Many of the renovations were done with keeping resemblances of the educational setting. Some of the original classroom doors have been preserved and sections of the old school lockers were salvaged and placed along hallways.

Workers were able to avoid covering two sections of the original flooring. Also much of the old auditorium was preserved and will serve as a community room and will be available for rent. Workers also preserved the old stage. Display cases are incorporated into the design and contain PHS memorabilia. Black and white photographs of students adorn many of the walls.

Construction crews uncovered a massive skylight that had been visible during the building's early days, but had been boarded over somewhere along the way. It has since been restored.

Display cases have been incorporated into the design, at the auditorium level, and those will contain PHS memorabilia. Black and white photographs of students from the building's school-house era will adorn many of the walls.
