(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig is determined to put a stop to inmates "fishing" for contraband.

Inmates dig holes into the mortar under the windows and drop lines to the outside. Then someone, outside the jail, will tie cigarettes or drugs, to the line and inmates pull the line back threw the opening under the window.

Some of the most popular items smuggled into the jail are tobacco items, drugs, cell phones and weapons, according to jail officials.

"It is a constant battle we fight," Craig told Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning. "I am hoping this will solve some of the problems."

Craig is having metal strips put on the outside of all the jail windows. He also had the shrubbery removed from around the building, so those supplying the items don't have a place to hide.

The metal strips will not be placed on the limestone, but on the window facings, that way no damage is done to the stone, Craig added. All the strips should be in place by the end of the week, with weather permitting.
