Last updated on Thursday, September 15, 2011

(JENNINGS COUNTY) - The body found Tuesday in Jennings County, near North Vernon is not that of missing I.U. student Lauren Spierer.

Investigators had a difficult time identifying the body even after an autopsy was conducted in Louisville Wednesday morning.

Jennings County Coroner Brian Sawyer says the body was badly decomposed. Sawyer had to use x-rays to help identify 40-year-old Scott Hess. An x-ray of a plate in his arm helped identify his body. The cause of death is listed as undetermined.

Hess had been camping the in the area and was found by a relative who went looking for him after they had not heard from him.

Hess' body was found in a wooded area on private property off of US Highway 50, a few miles from the town of North Vernon, in Center Township.
