(BEDFORD) - A Bloomington man suffered internal injuries after he flipped his car on Highway 37 Friday afternoon.
Bedford Police Department Major Danny Irwin said the man, who is not being identified, was traveling south on HWY 37 when he lost control of his Chevrolet Blazer.
"He over-corrected which caused him to cross the meridian and go into the north-bound lane," Irwin said.
The Blazer then crashed into the rock wall and flipped. The man was ejected from the vehicle and became trapped under it, Irwin said.
Bedford Fire Department firefighters used the Hurst tool and airbags to lift the Blazer off the man. Firefighters believe the man was not wearing a seatbelt.
"The man was breathing, but suffered serious injuries," said Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner. "Using the Hurst and the air bags is the gentlest way to lift the vehicle. Firefighters lifted the blazer gradually. With someone with those types of injuries, you don't want to relieve the pressure too quickly."
The man was taken to I.U. Health Hospital where a helicopter was waiting to fly him to the University Hospital of Louisville, Irwin said.
The accident is still under investigation.
