BFD Firefighters Develop Operating Guidelines

Last updated on Tuesday, September 20, 2011

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner developed a standard operating guideline between the fire department, I.U. Health and Rural Metro ambulance services.

The agreement spells out the responsibilities of BFD firefighters when requested on an ambulance assist call.

"The guidelines define what our duties are within the city limits and outside the city limits at disaster or mass casualty scene," Wagner says.

Bedford Board of Works and Safety members and city attorney Greg Pittman reviewed the agreement and gave their approval.

BFD firefighters will only respond to calls when they are requested to by either ambulance service.

"There may be times when they are unavailable and need us," he added.

In other business the board:

* Approved a request from Father Rick Elderd, of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church for crosswalks at I and 18th streets. The crosswalks would allow passage between church properties and their parking lots.

* Approved a request to remove the stop sign on Seventh Street. The sign is where the railroad tracks were, but since the tracks have been removed and the road repaired there is no longer a need for the stop sign.
