(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Community Corrections Director Joe Dibert presented his department’s annual report during a Lawrence County Commissioners meeting Tuesday morning.
Dibert told commissioners he was pleased with the departments overall successful completion rates.
The corrections program has been in place for 23 years and provides sentencing alternatives to the court in the form of Adult and Juvenile Home Detention, Community Service, Work Crew, Community Transition Program and the Juvenile Detention alternative Program.
During the fiscal year 2010-2011 the program had 856 people discharged with 695 people successfully completing the programs for a success rate of 81 percent.
The county saved $145,398 in labor to not-for-profit agencies with individuals who were sentenced to work crew and community service.
In other business:
The Lawrence County Highway Department accepted bids for road salt. The bids are being reviewed.
Mike Keeven, from DLZ, presented initial restoration plans for the cover bridge in Williams. Restoration will possibly begin in March.
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig told commissioners the jail currently had 152 inmates, 22 of those were female and 22 were Department of Correction inmates. Most of the inmates are there on drug or other serious charges according to Craig. Normally the jail houses 120 to 130 inmates.
"One problem we are having is they are destroying jail property one issue is the sleeping mats," Craig said. "It is a continuous problem."
The commissioners approved the hiring of a part-time jail nurse who will be used when the current nurse is on vacation.
