(BEDFORD, IN) - A state legislator hopes the Casey Anthony trial will trigger changes in Indiana’s law requiring people who find a dead body to report it to police.
Current law requires people who discover a dead body to report it within three hours or be charged with a misdemeanor, carrying a maximum one-year prison sentence and $5,000 fine.
But Senator Brent Steele (R-Bedford) wants lawmakers to consider making it a felony crime.
Steele says he has received dozens of messages from Hoosier constituents who have been upset by a Florida jury's decision to clear Anthony of murder and child abuse charges.
Defense attorneys had argued that Anthony's 2-year-old daughter accidentally drowned and that she panicked and hid the body.
Steele supports changing Indiana law to make a similar scenario a more serious offense.
