Obama To Withdraw Troops From Afghanistan

Last updated on Thursday, June 23, 2011

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - President Obama announced Wednesday night his plan to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan.

Obama said beginning next month, troops will begin withdrawing from Afghanistan with a complete withdrawal coming by 2014.

I.U. Central Eurasian Studies Professor Dr. Jamsheed Choksy says he's not sure if the Afghan people will have strong feelings about the withdrawal.

Choksy says the big fear for afghan people will be militants of both the Taliban and Al Qaida returning to Afghanistan and the Afghan forces either defecting to the militants or simply being ineffective.

Christian Lowe, Managing Editor for military.com, says he thinks 10,000 to 15,000 support units may stay in Afghanistan past 2014 but the majority of ground troops will be withdrawn.
