NWS Says 17 Tornadoes Touched Down Across Indiana

Last updated on Thursday, June 2, 2011

(BEDFORD, IN) - Meteorologists with the National Weather Service are now saying that 17 tornadoes touched down last Wednesday across Indiana, bringing the total number to 47 for the year.

A handful of new touchdowns were confirmed in Southern Indiana, near the Kentucky border.

Meteorologist Mike Ryan says that's very high.

The strongest of the 17 was an EF3 that hit in the Bedford area.

The other one that was comparable was down to the north of Evansville which went through Posey, Vanderburgh, and Gibson counties.

That was EF2 with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles an hour.

Ryan says Wednesday's outbreak still does not rival the fourth largest outbreak in Indiana history back on April 19th when 30 tornadoes touched down statewide.
