Most Indiana Produce Wont Be Ready For The 4th Of July Weekend

Last updated on Thursday, June 30, 2011

(VINCENNES, IN) - Most Indiana produce won’t be ready for the 4th of July weekend.

Daniel Egel, an Extension Plant Pathologist at the Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center in Vincennes, says the late harvesting of fruits and vegetables in Indiana is due to the heavy spring rains causing farmers to plant their crops late.

He says most sweet corn won't be ready by the weekend and we would normally see some cantaloupe by this time but he would be surprised if we saw any cantaloupe by the weekend.

Egel says some growers tell him it'll be near august before they have any watermelon ready.

Egel adds that he was able to sample some ripe sweet corn and says while the price may go up, it still tastes very good.

He encourages everyone to buy Indiana produce at their local farmer's market or grocery store when it is available.
