I.U. Approves 5.5% Tuition Increase

Last updated on Wednesday, June 1, 2011

(UNDATED) - I.U. has approved a 5.5% increase in tuition and fees for its Bloomington campus.

Just under half the increase is a temporary "repair and rehabilitation fee."

Trustees President Bill Cast says the $60-million dollars it'll raise is a tenth of I.U.'s repair needs, but says the university has to address urgent needs now to avoid paying more down the road.

President Michael McRobbie says it's the first time legislators have declined to set aside money for repair projects.

He says the extra fee is temporary, and will be used exclusively for repair projects.

Purdue and Ivy Tech are imposing similar fees.

The combined increase is 4.5% at IUPUI, and 3.5% at I.U.'s five regional campuses.

The trustees unanimously approved the increase.

Ball State University is planning an increase of 3.9% for the 2011-2012 academic year, followed by a 4.9% hike in 2012 and 2013.

The school's Board of Trustees will vote on the proposal in June. Indiana state plans to boost its tuition 3.5%, which is more than the 2.5% the state's Commission For Higher Education had recommended.
