(UNDATED) - The American Cancer Society says Indiana could save tens of millions of dollars by passing a comprehensive smoking ban.

A report by the ACS says how much each state in the country could save if they passed the smoking ban.

Amanda Estridge with the ACS says if a comprehensive bill was implemented, there would be a savings of $74-million in costs to treat lung cancer, heart attacks and strokes and more than $10 million in smoking-related pregnancy treatment costs.

Estridge says that one problem is when one chamber the state legislature passes a weaker bill and the other chamber doesn't do anything to strengthen it, which she says is what happened during the last session of the Indiana General Assembly.

She also says 70% of Hoosiers support a smoking ban and questions why businesses don't incorporate that into their business plans.
