Red Cross Begins Accepting Donations

Last updated on Thursday, May 26, 2011

The American Red Cross is providing for immediate needs of those affected by last night’s storms that hit Bartholomew, Decatur, Monroe and Lawrence Counties.

Red Cross workers are conducting damage assessment now and will begin to provide assistance based on that information.

The Red Cross provided temporary shelter to residents in Decatur, Bartholomew and Monroe Counties last night whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the storms. A Red Cross shelter will be opened in Bloomington this afternoon for those in Monroe County that need shelter tonight.

The Red Cross is working with emergency management agencies in the counties above as well as Clinton County to provide additional assistance as needed.

People should register on the Red Cross Safe and Well website to let loved ones know they are safe. They can also call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). People in the affected areas can list themselves as "safe and well" on the site. Friends and family outside the disaster area can then search for messages from their loved ones
by using a pre-disaster phone number or complete address.

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help in times of disaster. Those who want to help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and wildfires, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, can make a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. This gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit
www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS; people can also text the word "REDCROSS" to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013
