Scrap Metal Fires Closes Highway 37

Last updated on Thursday, April 14, 2011

(PAOLI, IN) - Orange County authorities say that a large load of metal and other scrap material caught fire Tuesday afternoon in the back of a truck, causing the shutdown of traffic on Highway 37 near Tapp Road.

Fire crews say the truck was part of two trucks from Chad's Recycle and Reuse carrying scrap metal to Bedford to be crushed.

Both drivers pulled over and tried to extinguish the fire themselves, but later called 911 for help.

Officials speculated that a cigarette or old car battery could have ignited the scrap.
