Security Expert: 'Shooting Shouldn't Come As Surprise'

Last updated on Monday, March 28, 2011

(UNDATED) - A former Indiana State Police Officer and School Security Expert says this month’s shooting at a Martinsville Middle School shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

Chuck Hibbert was instrumental in developing the Disaster Response Protocal for Indiana schools.

Hibbert says this unfortunate event is a clear example that no community is immune to this type of violence.

He says there are always pre-cursors and signs that would have indicated a potential attack.

There are unconfirmed reports that the suspected shooter made a veiled threat on his Facebook page.

Hibbert says unfortunately there isn't enough precedent when it comes to social media for school officials and law enforcement to actively monitor students.

Hibbert says social media is too new of a medium for there to be any legal precedent and it is still protected under the first amendment.
