New Cellphone Bill Seeks To Further Restrict Use In Cars

Last updated on Thursday, January 20, 2011

(INDIANA STATEHOUSE) - A house committee has voted to ban texting while driving and will consider next week whether to go further.

Garrett Republican David Yarde wants to make it a felony to injure someone while texting, or while talking on your cell phone.

The House Roads and Transportation Committee voted 10-2 to send a texting ban authored by Bedford Republican Eric Koch to the floor.

Yarde's bill is hung up for now because it exempts police and paramedics, while Koch's bill doesn't.

The conflict needs to be resolved before the committee votes.
