National Weather Service Declares 'Lightning Awareness Week'

Last updated on Monday, June 21, 2010

(UNDATED) - The National Weather service has declared this the 10th annual “Lightning Safety Awareness Week.”

The weather service says most victims of lightning strikes are close to safe shelter but wait too long to get there.

"If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike," says lightning safety Program Lead Donna Franklin.

"So our motto is... when thunder roars, go indoors."

The average number of deaths nationwide has declined from 73 in 2001 to 58 last year.

But Franklin says that's still too many.
