Police: Driver Fell Asleep, Causing Deadly Wreck

Last updated on Thursday, May 27, 2010

(BLOOMFIELD, IN) - Police say that the driver of an SUV that struck and killed an 81-year-old Bloomfield man Tuesday morning, fell asleep while driving.

61-year-old Terri Hadley had fallen asleep at the wheel before striking Estel McKamey.

Officers say that her car left the road, collided with a utility pole, struck McKamey on a sidewalk and then hit a block retaining wall.

Hospitals crews attempted to fly the man by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital, but were forced to land in Brazil when his condition got worse.

McKamey, who was known as an avid walker in the town, had written letters to Bloomfield newspaper, the Greene County Daily World, talking about his concerns for pedestrian safety.
