(UNDATED) - A report released today by the Governors Highway Safety Association reveals that motorcycle fatalities declined in 2009 by at least 10%.

Motorcycle deaths have been one of the few highway safety areas where's there's been no progress.

However, the new report indicates that not only were motorcycle deaths down in 2009, they were down slightly more than car and truck occupant deaths. Indiana is projected to be down 7%.

Reasons for the decline: fewer beginning motorcyclists, and increased attention to motorcycle safety programs.

There's still room for improvement.

41% of fatally-injured riders were not wearing helmets despite their proven effectiveness.

30 states, including Indiana still do not have helmet laws covering all riders.
