Woman Charged With Neglecting Infant Son

Last updated on Wednesday, March 3, 2010

(VERNON, IN) - A Jennings County woman, charged with neglecting her infant son has tested positive for marijuana and opiates.

Court records indicate that 29-year-old Nikkiah C. Weddle had fallen asleep with her son once before and was warned by her daughter and doctors about the dangers of sleeping with an infant.

The child was rushed to the hospital due to breathing trouble after being discovered pinned between his sleeping mother and a couch cushion by a relative.

The 2-month-old remained under care at the hospital as of Tuesday. Dr. Wes Whitler, a pathologist with Schneck Medical Center says that the case illustrates why parents should not sleep with their children, but under normal circumstances, he doesn't consider it to be neglect, just tired parents.

Weddle confessed to smoking marijuana and taking a hydrocodone pill prior to falling asleep.
