Shooting Investigation Experiencing Cultural Obstacles

Last updated on Thursday, January 21, 2010

(COLUMBUS, IN) - Police say that the investigation into the shooting of a Bartholomew County man has encountered some cultural obstacles.

Alberto Esparza Avitia was shot multiple times late Monday night, however he lives.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett says that deputies have identified Juevencio Montez as someone they want to question in the case, but they have not been able to find him.

Gorbett said the Hispanic community has "shut down" due to fear of police and cultural differences which make it difficult for investigators to develop leads.

He urges anyone with information on the case to call the sheriff's department's tip line, 379-1712; tips can be made anonymously.
