Fate Of Brownstown Senior Center Uncertain

Last updated on Wednesday, January 6, 2010

(BROWNSTOWN, IN) - In early October of 2009 a restaurant located next to Brownstown Senior Citizen’s Center in downtown Brownstown was destroyed by fire.

Since the fire, the fate of the senior citizen's center, which was also damaged by fire, appears to be unclear.

During the demolition of the pizza building, officials determined the two buildings shared a common stairwell, which brought the demolition to a halt.

A study of the structure shows that the stairwell will likely collapse if further demolition continues on the former Pizza Stop building.

The town's says the center is repairable and is willing to pay $119,000 of the $194,000 the building was insured for.

The town says that if the building eventually has to be torn down, it will be rebuilt.

The center is presently operating out of the Brownstown Senior Housing center.
