Hatfield School Students Collecting Food For LIFE Pantry

Last updated on Wednesday, December 9, 2009

(MITCHELL, IN) - Students at Hatfield Elementary School are working to collect donations for LIFE Food Pantry as part of the school’s ‘lessons in compassion and giving for the month of December’.

Cafeteria workers at the elementary school have spent weeks building the 'Hatfield Express' collection train in the school's cafeteria that holds the food donations brought in by students.

Carolyn Woolston, cafeteria manager, says that they have put charts on the walls to keep track of the donations and add up the totals by grade level; students are also going to keep track of the pounds of food brought in.

Woolston says that the children get excited because every time a new donation is brought in, the amount is measured on the charts and some of the student's teachers incorporate the charts into their classroom's as another tool to teach math.

The schools goal is to gather 700 items for the pantry.

Items may be delivered between 9:00AM and 10:30AM at the school.
