(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The candidate for the 2010 Monroe County Prosecutor’s race is now facing a misdemeanor charge of attempting to possess marijuana.
According to Bloomington Police, Bloomington Attorney David Schalk faces up to a year in jail and a fine up to $5,000 for hiring Lisa Edwards of Ellettsville to purchase marijuana from the proclaimed informant who had turned in a man Schalk was representing on drug charges.
The informant was to testify against Schalk's client, and the whole purpose Schalk hired Edwards to buy the drugs, according to Schalk, was to discredit the informant in court and prove he was a drug dealer.
On June 25, 2008, Schalk reportedly met up with a Edwards and gave her $200 to buy the drugs and a digital voice recorder for the woman to record the deal.
The woman ended up only buying $50 worth of marijuana and used the rest of the money on gasoline, cell phone minutes and Chinese food; the woman and her boyfriend later smoked the marijuana.
Edwards later contacted Schalk to falsely inform him that buy had been made and that Schalk should come over to pick it up; Edwards actually balled up some newspaper and pretended that the marijuana was inside without Schalk's knowledge.
Schalk said he didn't want to have it in his possession contacted Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller at home to see what he should do, thats when authorities discovered the illegal activity that Schalk had been involved in.
Lawrence Superior Court Judge Michael Robbins was called in as special judge in the case.
Robbins determined that arranging the purchase and supplying the money violated the law.
