Police: Inmates Used Sharpened Hangers To Stab Jailors

Last updated on Wednesday, October 7, 2009

(NORTH VERNON, IN) - More details are being released about the stabbings of Jennings County Jail guards during an attempted escape early Tuesday.

Ryan Renfroe, James Smith and Roger Lee Bushhorn are all teens accused of conspiring to escape by crafting makeshift metal knives out of clothing bag hangers.

Jennings County Prosecutor Alan Marshall is disgusted by the attack and plans to try them in adult court.

Jennings County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Jerry Shepherd says the inmates took jail officer Vickie Day hostage, stabbing the jailer four times and handcuffing her.

The inmates then took pepper spray from a storage cabinet and sprayed responding officers during a struggle, taking two more hostage.

Jail officer Walter Peace was stabbed in the head by the inmates.

The inmates were eventually stopped by officers from the Sheriff's Department, North Vernon Police and Indiana State Police using tasers. Renfroe had been previously charged with murder in the shooting deaths last month of an elderly couple.

The three inmates are now facing kidnapping and escape charges, while smith is also accused of attempted murder.

The three hostages are expected to survive the attack.
