City Of Columbus Accused Of Discrimination

Last updated on Thursday, October 1, 2009

(COLUMBUS, IN) - The Federal Government is accusing the city of Columbus of discriminating against recovering drug addicts by refusing to allow an addiction recovery home to open downtown.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court Wednesday, the Department of Justice defines recovering drug addicts as "handicapped" and alleges the city violated the Fair Housing Act by discriminating against them.

A non-profit corporation attempted to open the recovery home, called Bethesda House, in 2005 and 2007, but the city's board of zoning appeals denied both applications.
