Fire Chief Dies After Responding To Car Crash

(MITCHELL, IN) - Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Jim Zeeks was pronounced dead following heart-related issues while at a car crash scene.

Following a car crash near Mitchell in which a vehicle flipped numerous times, Zeeks' and fire crews arrived at the scene of the wreck, when Zeeks reportedly suffered a heart attack.

Zeeks was rushed to a local hospital emergency room by an ambulance, accompanied by two police vehicles.

Lawrence County Coroner, John Sherrill informed WBIW News that Zeeks was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to Sherrill, the preliminary cause of Zeeks' death has been determined as heart related.

An autopsy was conducted yesterday in which the official cause of death will be announced within 2 to 3 weeks.

There is no word yet on any injuries related to the car wreck in which the fire chief responded.
