(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Police Department is now one of the first in the state of Indiana to use a new electronic ticket writing system.

Instead of writing tickets, officers use a hand-held scanner to read the bar codes on driver's licenses and registrations.

The electronic Citation and Warning System or eCWS creates an electronic ticket right at the roadside without any scribbled handwriting.

The ticket information is then stored electronically and printed out using a handheld printer.

The time needed for a traffic stop will reportedly be greatly reduced because the citation information can be transferred electronically allowing more time for officers to patrol.

There are currently over 100 Indiana law enforcement departments including the Indiana State Police that use the eCWS system.
