One Dead Following Fiery Crash

(MARTIN COUNTY) - Shortly after 2:00 PM Saturday (July 18th) a two vehicle crash on US 231 near the Truelove Church Road resulting in the death of a 19-year-old.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 2001 Ford Ranger pick-up truck driven by Dustin J. Ash, and was traveling northbound on US 231, when for unknown reasons, the 19-year-old traveled left of center and hit, head-on, a 2000 Freightliner owned by Alvin Almada.

After the collision the 2000 Freightliner caught fire.

Ash was pronounced dead at the scene by the Martin Co. Coroner's Office.

Hannah L. Bartlett, 18, of Washington, a passenger in the pick-up was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital and then air-lifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville to be treated for several internal injuries and broken bones.

She is listed in critical condition at this time.

The driver of the semi-tractor trailer, Alvin Almada, 54, Plainfield, IN escaped without injury.

US 231 was shut down for approximately 4 hours while emergency crews worked to clean-up the crash.
