(LAWRENCE COUNTY) - A final decision will be made tonight by the Lawrence County Council concerning the possibility of tax increases.
Due to the financial shortfalls of the County and all of the cities in the county, the council has been looking at several different options for help with the shortfall.
The name of the suggested plan is the Local Option Income Tax or LOIT, and includes several different options for the council to choose from.
Taxes could be raised upwards of 1.25%.
During last week's public hearing, the council listened to the points of view of county residents and the overall disliking of the tax increase, however there were other residents at the hearing who weren't necessarily for or against the increase, just telling their neighbors that they "need to stand together during these tough economic times".
The decision will be made tonight during a council meeting at 6:30 PM; citizens are welcome to attend, however, public opinion will not formally be heard.
Stay tuned to WBIW.com for the outcome of the final decision made by the county council.
The following are the options the council has to choose from in order to reduce financial shortfalls:
1.) Drastically reduce employees.
2.) Reduce employee benefits at a time when benefits are so important.
3.) Reduce services to the tax paying public by reduction of hours in Courthouse operation.
4.) Reduction of contributions in support of community organizations such as: 4-H Fair, Humane Society, Rural Transit, and others.
5.) Help to fund shortfalls that Bedford, Mitchell, and Oolitic are facing in regard to public safety.
6.) Adopt Local Option Income Tax (LOIT)
