(BEDFORD) - The BNL Stars fieldhouse court will be named after local basketball legend Damon Bailey.
During Thursday night's North Lawrence School Board meeting, it was decided that the fieldhouse court will now be known as the Damon Bailey floor.
Kurt Godlesvke represented the BNL Athletic Department and proposed the idea to the board, stating that Bailey "is a big part of our basketball program out at the high school; he not only donates monetarily to our athletic department and to the basketball program, but he volunteers his time."
Kurt Godlevske later said, "it seems to be a good time after talking with Mr. Day and Mr. Callahan, we are re-doing the floor surface (basketball court floor), next week, which is also the 20-year anniversary from when they made the run and won the state championship, and I think it is a noble thing of us to do to honor Damon with everything that he continues to do within our athletic program in our community by honoring him with naming the court inside the fieldhouse after him."
Although the idea was passed and put into effect, two out of the six board members had objections.
The opposing board members stated that although it is the 20-year anniversary of the state championships, they did not think that it was fair to the other players on the team nor the coach of the team, considering they all participated in making the championship win possible.
When the new floor is completed, Damon Bailey's name will be posted on both sidelines facing the bleachers.
