IU IT's Discover Huge Energy Savings

Last updated on Wednesday, June 17, 2009

(BLOOMINGTON) - A project started by an IT staff at Indiana University ended up giving the school very high energy savings.

Larry Riss director of Education Technology Services, and Steve Schunk, associate director for systems administration both worked to develop ways to save energy at the School of Education.

The energy savings were possible simply by switching all of the computers into "sleep mode" when they were not in use which has the potential for saving hundreds of thousands of dollars for the university.

IT managers in other university offices and academic units are exploring ways to also reduce energy use for computing.

IU could save an estimated $500,000 a year in energy costs.
