(BEDFORD) - Bedford police took a man into custody last night after he allegedly tried to make off with a large breed dog from the White River Humane Society.
Bedford Assistant Police Chief Joe DeWees tells us 46-year-old John Dotts of Bedford went to the humane society on Pumphouse Road yesterday looking to adopt a male Newfoundland dog, but didn't want him to be neutered, which is humane society policy.
DeWees says Dotts allegedly managed to get the dog into his vehicle, and left for home, but White River officials called him telling him to bring it back.
He did turn around and bring the "Newfie" back, police say, and that's when they made contact with him and made the arrest.
Dotts was then taken to the Lawrence County jail facing a charge of theft.
Newfoundlands are large dogs, sometimes getting up to 150 pounds, and "Newfie" puppies can bring in, at times, well over $1,000.
