(BEDFORD) - Despite efforts by county fire chiefs to ban controlled fires while conditions remain so dry, the Hoosier National Forest says they plan on starting few!
Franklin Lograsso with the Hoosier National Forest office here in Bedford says his team is planning a series of controlled fires to clear out fire fuel on forest floors, and improve wildlife habitats. The first burn is planned for an 800-acre plot in Jackson County near the Houston area, to be followed by a trio of 2-300 acre areas in Brown County.
Following that, a rare ecological "barren" area at Morgan Ridge in Perry County, about 750 acres in size, will be the final fire on the agenda.
The exact dates of these burns are subject to change depending on weather and other conditions, but they want nearby residents to be aware of these burns just in case they are affected by smoke or other air quality problems.
